August 3 Speaker- Tom Carroll on Bamboo Rods

Tom Carroll is the owner of “CHERRYLOG RODS”, a custom fishing rod shop, originally located in Cherry Log, Ga., now re-locating to the Shenandoah Valley, close to Winchester, Va., on the banks of Lake Frederick and close to the South fork of the Shenandoah river and the great native brook trout streams of the Shenandoah National Park.

The shop specializes in fly rods, principally graphite and fiberglass, but also builds split bamboo fly rods on commission, from select bamboo blanks.  Ultra-light and light spinning tackle upon request, now that the shop will be in a great area for fishing for smallmouth bass on the great rivers in Virginia.

Tom has been building fly rods for over 20 years, first as a hobby, then full time, once he retired from a busy dental practice in Atlanta, Georgia. His fly rods are owned by fishers in over 7 states and the Bahamas.

His love for preserving fly fishing tradition has led to an active business in restoration of vintage bamboo fly rods, although seeing the many advances in graphite and fiberglass rods is exciting and bound to improve a fisher person’s enjoyment of this great pastime.

Topics to be covered:  fly rod construction; how to get more fun from a custom fly rod; various custom improvements that a custom builder can perform.  Also, a short mention of “How to Break a fly rod”!
